Last year our friend Jimmy Wanko was diagnosed with cancer. Friends, Family, as well as the local community came together to raise money, to help Jimmy pay for the substantial medical expenses. The Event was named Jimmy Jam, a concert event to raise money for his emergency treatment. Due to the overwhelming response we received from the original Jimmy Jam, coupled with the ever present search for a cure, The Jimmy Jam Foundation Inc. was formed. Now as a foundation, our mission is to continue fundraising for children’s cancer research and treatment. This year we are hosting a charity concert event known as Jimmy Jam 2. This event will be held at the Anne Arundel County Fair Grounds, Saturday September 2, 2006 rain or shine in Annapolis, MD. The recipients of this event will be John Hopkins Pediatric Oncology unit and The Children’s Hospital in Washington, D.C. Of the 1.4 million Americans diagnosed with cancer each year, only 12,600 of them are children. Each year, approximately 20,000 children are undergoing treatment for some type of cancer, and about 1 in 300 children will develop some type of cancer before the age of 19. Nearly everyday, about 35 to 45 children in the United States will be diagnosed with this disease and the end of the day at least 7 families will have lost a child from cancer. Due to substantial risk, preliminary testing cannot be preformed on children. As a result most financial funding is focused toward the treatment of adults, thus limiting the amount of financial support needed for pediatric care. These devastating statistics along with our personal attachment and dedication to finding a cure have continued to motivate this Foundation to work diligently to raise as much money for the cause as possible. If we are able to help just one child or prevent one family from the loss of a child, then we have done our part.
